Crater Lake

Crater Lake

Sorry, Crater Lake has no airport, but it IS an aviation destination. Viewing Crater Lake, from the ground or the air, is something that everyone remembers the rest of their lives. An awesome sight.

If you want to see it from the ground you will have to drive in from home, or maybe rent a car in Klamath Falls, Medford or Bend. Well worth the trouble but a hard days driving there and back.

Seeing it from the air is also an awesome experience and a lot easier to arrange on your day off.

One thing to note, the area is protected and pilots are advised not to fly below 2,000 AGL. This is not mandatory but is adviseable during the summer. This is not hard to manage since the lake is 1,000 to 2,000 feet below the rim. People on the ground have been known to complain and cause trouble about it. Since most of the park is closed by snow except during the summer there is an easy way to keep everyone happy. Plan to do most of your Crater Lake sight seeing while the park is otherwise closed.

A warning to photographers, it is hard to take a bad picture of Crater Lake, but impossible to get a picture that captures a fraction of its grandeur.
