64S64S/Prospect State AirportProspect is just to the south-west of Crater Lake on the banks of the Rogue River. A nice place to spend the afternoon. The approach to the airport is easy if you are coming up the river from the south, or down the river from the north. To the west is a bit steep and the the east is the towering Crater Lake caldera. When you are over the airport you will occasionally lose sight of it due to the tall trees on all sides. Plan your approach, fly a standard pattern and this airport is easy. The runway will be big and beautiful when you turn final. On the ground it is best to park on the paved pad on the east side in the middle. During flyins you will have to park on the soft sand shoulders of the runway. This is not a problem as long as you are very, very, careful that your propwash is not directed near anyone or anything. A poorly executed parking turn can blow nasty sand on newly washed airplanes and campers. I have seen this lead to ugly words and nasty phone calls. Once on the ground there are lots of things to do. Walk out the airport road to the north to OR-62. Turn left and continue to the intersection of OR-230. From there you have a choice. left or right. Turn right and the oldest Hotel in Oregon is just there. A bit further is a little bar/restaurant with good food. When in the bar be sure to check out some of the best action taxidermy I have ever seen. They have a cougar taking down a deer that is a perfect frozen moment. If instead your turn left you will pass a store and then come to a little driveway to a public parking area. Go in and then follow the trail down to the Rogue River. In a few dozen yards you descend from the hot, sunny, dusty air in to a delightful area of cool breezes, ferns and waterfalls. A perfect Zen moment before you return to the airport to fire up your noisy aircraft. Be sure to check out the annual airport fly-in for more special events. Airnav - 64S ODA - 64S
