5S2/Crescent Lake State

Nestled between two high mountain lakes near the spine of the Cascades south of Mt Bachelor is Crecent Lake Airport. Forget about it in the winter as it is not plowed. Forget about it on a hot summer day as the density altitude may 8,000 feet. The rest of the time this almost 4,000 foot long airport is fine. Just be sure you know your airplane has the high altitude performance this runway requires. This is an Oregon Warning Airport and they have good advice on the airport.

Once you are down you can park on the small pad at the north east end of the runway. That puts you right next to a small road running north/south. Head North a hundred yards and you are in a little village on OR-58. Run across the busy highway and you will find a motel, a restaurant and a bar that also serves food. The restaurant is only open in the mornings so I have not tried it yet. The bar serves a fair burger. I guess if you had a bike, or did not mind the hike you could journey up to Cresecnt Lake less than a mile to the west.
